SPRINGDALE -- Springdale aldermen on Monday endorsed raises for themselves and other elected and appointed city officials for 2024.

The City Council, acting as a committee of the whole, recommended approving a proposal raising the salaries of the mayor, city clerk/treasurer, city attorney and for members of the City Council and the Planning Commission by about 4%.

The budget ordinance will be considered when the City Council meets Nov. 28.

According to information from the city, Mayor Doug Sprouse's salary will increase from $156,390 to $162,646 in 2024. City Attorney Ernest Cate's salary will increase from $143,275 to $149,006 in 2024. City Clerk/Treasurer Denise Pearce will see a salary increase from $109,562 to $113,944 in 2024.

The pay for City Council members will increase from $12,720 to $13,229 in 2024 and salaries for members of the Planning Commission will increase from $5,088 to about $5,291.

Cody Loerts, the city's finance director, said city employees will see raises in 2024 as well. Loerts said the city had a salary study done and some positions were recommended for larger increases to keep them in line with similar positions in other city governments. In general, Loerts said, city employees will see raises of around 4% as well.

The council also voted Monday to amend the city's 2024 budget to include 24 new vehicles at a cost of about $1 million.

Sprouse and Colby Fulfer, his chief of staff, said the city is trying to purchase the vehicles now and may be able to get the purchase done before the end of the year so they were not initially included in the 2024 budget. Sprouse said the money will come from the city's general fund reserve no matter when they are purchased.

Aldermen Mike Overton and Jeff Watson both said they preferred to have the money included in the annual budget as has been done in the past and the amendment to the budget was approved.

A resolution approving the city's 2024 budget was approved after the amendment to include the vehicles was added. Sprouse and Fulfer said the city's 2023 budget was for about $75 million and the 2024 budget is projected to be around $83 million.
